Lydian Scale
Explore the Lydian scale, its distinctive raised fourth, and discover how it integrates into the system of scales and modes. This example is for F Lydian.

What Is the Lydian Scale
Lydian scale is the fourth mode of the major scale and has a bright, dreamy, and uplifting sound. It is a major mode but due to raised fourth, it has almost floating quality compared to the standard major scale.
To create a Lydian scale, start on the fourth note of any major scale and play the same notes. Interval pattern of the Lydian mode is: W-W-W-H-W-W-H. That extra whole step between the 3rd and 4th degrees is what gives Lydian its signature sound.
On guitar, this scale is often used in progressive rock, fusion, film scores, and experimental music. It works especially well over major chords when you want a more colorful sound.
Lydian offers a fresh and inspiring alternative for composing or improvising. It’s a great choice when you want to break away from traditional tonalities.
