What Is Circle of Fifths?
Circle of Fifths is a tool that helps guitarists and musicians understand the relationships between different keys. Picture a clock: instead of numbers, you have key signatures.
Starting from C major at the top, each step clockwise moves up by a perfect fifth (C > G > D > A, etc.). Go counterclockwise, and you move in perfect fourths (C > F > B♭, etc.).
The circle shows major keys on the outer ring and their relative minor keys on the inner ring. In our tool, you see relative minor when choosing the key.
Each step around the circle adds or removes a sharp or flat from the key signature. So, it is a perfect cheat sheet for remembering how many sharps or flats each key has.
The keys next to each other on the circle are closely related and sound great together. Want a safe and smooth-sounding chord progression? Stick to chords from neighboring keys. For example, if you're in C major, nearby chords like G major, F major, or A minor will fit nicely.
